Revised posters

Hey everybody these are my revised posters. I had taken ill the other day so unfortunately i couldn't put them up for critique. I decided to flatten down the 4119 and make it using simple flat coffins instead. I also changed the font on the Sadam poster, played with the angles a bit more and cleaned it up...tell me what you think.

Missed Class in Oct., Make-up Class Oct. 11, 11am

hi guys

i won't be in the country oct. 13-21. that misses a class for us (oct. 15), so i'd like to do a make-up class. most of you seem to be OK with sat. 11 oct. at 11am, so we're shooting for that time. i think it will be in the 4th floor lunch room, though i may schedule a lab class depending where we are in the typeface design project.

please attend this class if at all possible- it will be just as important as any other.

cheers.

get with the times.

this is a VIDEO of a typographic conference.
its like so lol...

Chelsea Galleries

hey guys,

I'm going to the galleries friday afternoon. I particularly want to see Nicotine Dream ( as well as many others). BUT I am usually accompanied by my roommate who just quit smoking . . . so she's not gonna make this one . . .

Homework, Notes, 9/24/08

ohayoo-

for those who weren't in class yesterday, please post here your final reworked posters. if you can get them up here before next monday they will count fully toward your grade.

your next assignment:

1. take a minimum of 10 photos of found typography. it must be handmade, found, or physically manufactured. it can NOT be on printed material (i.e. billboard, poster, magazine, etc.). i want unique specimens of type that are not yet a fully designed typefaces. why? because you will be using one of these images as basis/reference for a display typeface YOU will be designing.

2. bring to class these 10 (or more) samples printed on 8.5" x 11" paper. also, upload your top 5 in a post here on the class blog.

suggestions: look at manhole covers, building plaques, gravestones, graffiti, tattoos, handmade restaurant signs, paintings, etc. look for stuff you identify with, that you can be happy with for a few weeks.

to facilitate this process we will be meeting in a computer lab next week and learning how to make our examples into a digital typeface. lab room number to come. please check this space before next wed. and pass the word around to classmates who don't.

cheers,
n

Prank Design

http://prankdesign.com/old/

These guys rock. It's a small little company but they do everything from logos, packaging, advertising, cd covers,
etc. They have an eclectic process and their approach is more artistic. They definitely project themselves and have fun with each individual project, while satisfying the needs of the their clients. What draws me to their aeshetic is how the images keep a sort of artistic integrity while also being clean and professional. Each account is handled differently, yet their work as a whole has this underlying energy and sort of sense of humor. They're definitely appealing to a younger audience but the graphic quality and craft is really beautiful. They also like to play with type as image quite often; its expressive in a quirky way.

The images on their site are protected so ive enclosed the link. Check them out.

Inebriated Typeface

Hey Guys,

I am supposed to design a new logo for Drink n' Draw for third ward. It's going to be in black (no color) and needs to reduce relatively well. (at least to 12-14pts). The symbol for the event is already done I just need to pick a new type. The one now is insanely BAD. Cant wait to change it but I was wondering if anyone had a suggestion. I'm open.

Thanks

Invading Space

On Design in general:
I encountered what I consider Good Design last night. I prefer when Good Design manifests itself as something that removes you from your role as detached spectator and thrusts new experience upon you. Anything that can actively change your behavior and perceptions.
I attended The Last Supper Festival at Third Ward. The theme of the event was to bring people together at the table to think about the world hunger crisis.
I walk in expecting to find a typical buffet and paintings on the wall. But the organization of space is anything but expected. Around the periphery of the room stand display podiums with little reflective silver trays of food. I notice a very sculptural cake next to a tray of cookies. There are only two cookies left and I go to grab one. But It's not real food, it's a sculpture. I think " oh Shit. I touched the artwork" and look around to see if anyone has noticed. Some of the food is edible and on other trays theres syringes and viles and glued on pills.
The best part of the buffet are these Giant metal scales hanging from the ceiling with shallow troughs of food hanging from chains. They move up and down and are placed  so close together so you have to maneuver in and out and pull them down to  and see whats within. Then, while trying to balance your plate and drink, and avoid getting smashed by another scale, you have to fight off about ten people for a spoonful of cucumbers. The whole experience was really uncomfortable and awkward. I loved the whole thing because the design was so intrusive and really made you think about the entire interaction.
Also, to add to the surrealism of the evening there's a rock band playing in the opposite photo studio. There's a seamless wall in the backdrop and instead of typical instrument they're using marching band instruments. It was like a scene out of Shortbus. The whole night made me reflect on the Ted talk about designs relation to happiness. For me, Design is pleasurable when it heightens your consciousness, especially when it does so by making you Uncomfortable.

TED Talks

hi

the site we were watching that video on yesterday was www.TED.com. click on 'talks' at the tops to see a list of hundreds of amazing thinkers presenting their ideas. you can search by tags like 'most inspiring' or 'most jaw dropping' or 'funniest'.

enjoy!

Homework, Notes, 9/17/08

hi guys

sorry our critique was rushed yesterday. for those who feel like they have questions, big issues, or were absent, i'd love it if you posted a version of your revised posters here before next class (by this weekend would be best) so we could all give you feedback. this refers specifically to callie, gloria, and noelis.

your assignment for next week:

1. choose the most successful poster/ideas for EACH side of the issue and revise it (total of TWO posters). make sure sure they are tight, and then bring them to 'east side copy' on 13th between 5th and university. there you will get them enlarged to true poster size- 3 feet by 4 feet (or as big as possible). shouldn't cost more than $7 or $8 dollars per poster. so next week i want TWO posters at 3'x4'.

2. read the rest of chapter 1 in 'designing with type' and ALL of chapter 2- i.e. up to p. 60.

see you next week!

Free Typeface Resource - dafont.com

this site has a ton of free downloadable typefaces- primarily display, but some decent text fonts as well. if you're looking to add some character to your posters...

Homework, Notes, 9/11/08

hi all

first, i hope you're all doing well today and maybe sending good thoughts to those who have a hard time reliving this date.

i asked for a few things for next class:

1. please bring in 3 posters for each side of your political issue, for a total of 6 posters. they should each be 10"x16", horizontal or vertical, in B&W. you may do variations on 1 concept or all different concepts/visuals. as i said in class, if it going to be all type make it look good. 1 suggestion is to find a book of posters in the parsons library for inspiration- there are some amazing ones.

2. read the introduction and first part of chapter 1 of 'designing with type'- pp. 1-16. there will be a quiz, as this is important stuff.

another suggestion to those who were having difficulty with poster concepts: register with the blog and post your ideas (even visuals!). i at least will comment, and it's a like a free midweek critique.

hasta miercoles,
n

Homework, Notes, 9/3/08

hi all

great to meet you on wednesday. it looks like it's going to be a good class with lots of personality. for any who decide to drop the class- no worries. most classes are 90% what you bring into the room, so as long as you are present in any class you choose it will be worthwhile.

blah blah blah. on to the assignment for this week.

you were asked in class to bring in two things:

1. 30 (or more) examples of typography. words, phrases, sentences, paragraphs, pages, etc. they are for a class collage, so please have them already cut/printed out and ready to paste.

2. for your political posters, A. a paragraph or so about both sides of the political issue you were assigned, and B. a slogan/concept for each of the two posters.

aside from that- once you get the invitation to join this blog, please do me a favor and publish a post with the words "hello" and your first name in the post title (no need for body content).

thanks! see you wednesday.
