Homework, Notes 10/27/09

IMPORTANT - we will be meeting in a lab next week again to work. check here next tues. morning for the room number.

your assignments this week:

1. revise/complete your symbolic item from last week. bring it in PRINTED. if you did a flag or logo you need only bring 1, not 3, but make it good.

2. collect the family background material - symbols, colors, words, typefaces - of another person in the class. create 3 detailed sketches of an item (again, flag, logo, crest or tarot card) for them. most of you should have paired up with someone yesterday...
  • your partner is now your CLIENT. he/she will have all the resources you need to set this project up, and will also have the power to suggest ideas and critique your work. don't get "fired"!
  • you may use any of the 4 symbolic items except the one you used already for your family. it does not matter which item your partner created last week- perhaps you can do a better/different version than them?
  • the sketches may be in pencil, marker or digital, but they must be tight enough to critique.
  • if you worked in a particular style last week, try switching it up.

IMPORTANT - Room change for Tues. Oct. 26

we were supposed to be meeting in room i402 at 55 west 13th st. (not class), but that room is booked. instead we will be meeting in room D701, which is in 6 east 16th street.

don't forget to bring your work in.

see you there!

Homework, Notes 10/20/09

hey y'all

IMPORTANT: we are NOT meeting in class next week (10/27). we are meeting in the labs at 55 w.13th, in room 402. bring your assignments with you to work on!

for those who haven't yet, please post your pixel font and favorite date poster.

assignment for next week: choose ONE of the following item types, and combining the colors, symbolic images and fonts you collected last week create a new graphic that represents your family.

A. FLAG

B. LOGO

C. CREST

D. TAROT CARD

special requirements for each item:
  • FLAG - must be a horizontal rectangle; must be simple, bold, geometric and graphic; colors must be high-contrast
  • LOGO - must combine your family name with imagery (i.e. be a 'logotype')
  • CREST - must have as its unifying element a shield-like shape of your choosing; must contain at least 4 symbols; must contain your family name
  • TAROT CARD - must be a vertical rectangle; must have as it's central element a figure (i.e. some sort of representation of YOU) interacting with other symbols; must contain your family name

PLEASE NOTE that if you are doing the FLAG or the LOGO you must create 3 versions of your graphic. if you are doing the CREST or TAROT CARD you only need 1 version.

i advise you to think carefully about which elements to use, and then play a lot with FORM. sketch, google, look in books, whatever it takes to get the symbols to work together in a beautiful, unified, original way.

new chracter assignment

Hi, sorry I missed class last week, and for posting late!
Here is my new character; the function/meaning of my character is "...etc."

The abbreviation etc stands for et cetera, a Latin expression meaning "and other things" or "and so on." So, my character can be used in place of "...etc."

I combined the letter E, T and C to form my new character.

I hope you guys can guess correctly :)

Melanie Yu-

new character

Hi,
I wasn't in class so here is my new character
It's called "Sh"
and has a "shhh" sound
(sorry for the quality of the picture, i had hand drawn them and it doesnt show up too well when I took a photo of it)

A New Character Assignment

Sorry that I missed this week's class.
This is my new character "lul."
It is used in the beginning and the end of phases and sentences
to show that the writer has used a sense of "sarcasm."
People often misread things and I do too,
so I made a letter that looks like a container, and it
does function as a symbol that signify, the words you see
contain different meaning from the literal meaning.

Guess which style is which typeface.

It's Century, Garamond, Helvetica, Baskerville, and Bodony in order.

Homework, Notes 10/13/09

so we're moving away from focusing on type for a few weeks, and beginning to think about images. specifically, images with meaning: symbols. we are going to focus the scope of this project to something you most likely understand well: your family.

your assignment this week is to bring in the following research:
  1. a brainstormed LIST (not paragraph) of 20 or more words describing your family
  2. 10 typefaces that you think might have a character that relates to your family. think about the history, the form, the usage of each typeface to help you decide. as example typeset your family name in each typeface.
  3. swatches of 5 colors that relate to your family. to aid you consider a color's emotional meaning, its use in daily life, and its place in your family's culture.
  4. MOST IMPORTANT - think of 10 symbolic images that represent your family, and gather 3 representations of EACH image, for a total of 30 symbolic images. these representations can be simple, complex, or abstract, and can be drawn OR pulled from the internet or a book. we are looking for variations in form for each symbol, but not necessarily meaning. see below for example.
present your research printed on a series of 8.5"x11" pages, arranged as you see fit.
