new chracter assignment

Hi, sorry I missed class last week, and for posting late!
Here is my new character; the function/meaning of my character is "...etc."

The abbreviation etc stands for et cetera, a Latin expression meaning "and other things" or "and so on." So, my character can be used in place of "...etc."

I combined the letter E, T and C to form my new character.

I hope you guys can guess correctly :)

It's called "Sh"
and has a "shhh" sound

A New Character Assignment

Sorry that I missed this week's class.

This is my new character "lul."

It is used in the beginning and the end of phases and sentences
to show that the writer has used a sense of "sarcasm."

People often misread things and I do too,

so I made a letter that looks like a container, and it

does function as a symbol that signify, the words you see

contain different meaning from the literal meaning.

Guess which style is which typeface.

It's Century, Garamond, Helvetica, Baskerville, and Bodony in order.

Homework, Notes 10/13/09

so we're moving away from focusing on type for a few weeks, and beginning to think about images. specifically, images with meaning: symbols. we are going to focus the scope of this project to something you most likely understand well: your family.

your assignment this week is to bring in the following research:

a brainstormed LIST (not paragraph) of 20 or more words describing your family
10 typefaces that you think might have a character that relates to your family. think about the history, the form, the usage of each typeface to help you decide. as example typeset your family name in each typeface.
swatches of 5 colors that relate to your family. to aid you consider a color's emotional meaning, its use in daily life, and its place in your family's culture.
MOST IMPORTANT - think of 10 symbolic images that represent your family, and gather 3 representations of EACH image, for a total of 30 symbolic images. these representations can be simple, complex, or abstract, and can be drawn OR pulled from the internet or a book. we are looking for variations in form for each symbol, but not necessarily meaning. see below for example.

present your research printed on a series of 8.5"x11" pages, arranged as you see fit.

Sorry I was not in class to present. Can't wait to tell you guys all about this one....I tried to create a simple letter that was easily translated to the other fonts we had to create it in, simply, by using pieces of letters that define each typeface.

assignments this week:

1. if you haven't done it already please post here an image of your pixel typeface alphabet, and your favorite date poster. (we seem to be having trouble posting images, so to be safe stick to JPGs that aren't bigger than 1000 x 1000 px).

2. in thinking with type read pp. 42-60, about type classification and style.

3. based on the worksheet i handed out in class, create a new character for the roman alphabet. it should have some sound ("ch"), function ("&") or meaning ("!"). then, for each of the five typefaces on the worksheet- garamond, baskerville, bodoni, century and helvetica- create an upper and lower case version of the character.

begin by sketching the character in your own handwriting style. this will give you a sense how it, like all typographic characters, evolved from the hand into a letterform.
to help guide you in creating the final version of the letterforms pay close attention to the details of each of the five typefaces
you may use the computer and print out or draw by hand
present each upper/lower case pair on a single sheet of 8.5"x11" paper, for a total of 5 sheets (one for each typeface). please omit the name of the typeface so we can guess.
if you need the whole typeface for reference i MAY be persuaded to email you the 5 faces. mac only sorry.
