hello
for this week you will be making thumbnail sketches that depict as accurately as possible the layout of very single page of your book. think of this as a sort of 'storyboard' plan. it's a straightforward process with the following steps:
i want TWO full sets of thumbnails from everybody. those who are comfortable working in adobe indesign may begin there; we will be going over indesign in class next week. thumbnails may be drawn or printed.
stay tuned for the specific classroom number we'll be meeting at.

- work out your physical page size/proportion.
- figure out exactly which specific images and text will be included (in this case your song titles & lyrics will make up the majority of your text).
- develop a grid (fixed margins, columns, rows, etc.) that will keep your content organized and navigable. remember that you will want to achieve both consistency and variation from page to page.
- think about telling a story with your content, about creating drama, rhythm and sense with your sequencing and layouts.
- create thumbnails sketches of your entire book. the more accurate you are with the thumbnails (cleaner drawing, more specific image & copy amount representation), the less time you will spend working out the final pages.

IMPORTANT: i forgot to mention in class- please read pp.62-79 and pp.112-129 in thinking with type. they are, respectively, the first parts of the TEXT and GRID sections.
also, please post your final symbol items here- both yours and your client's.
so we are starting a new assignment: music album special packaging. this will be our last big assignment. you will be creating EITHER a book or a website.
the first part will involve collecting content. so... choose an album by an artist that you relate to, or think would be an interesting design challenge. then:

- collect ALL the song lyrics for this album. they will be the 'body' text of your piece.
- collect/create 12 pieces of ORIGINAL artwork. they can be:
- photos you take
- illustrations you make
- photos or illustrations by friends/colleagues who are willing to participate
- graphics/typographics; in the case of this choice, you must collect 12 examples of found inspiration and an create an original poster that illustrates how you plan to use this found material
