Resource on grids

Hey everyone i found this website I thought you all might find helpful.
http://www.thegridsystem.org/

Also these are the images I had for show and tell last week. I thought they had an interesting way of arranging type.

IMPORTANT - Room change for Tues. Nov. 24

we will be meeting in room D701, which is in 6 east 16th street. same room as last time. pass the word on.

please bring your images & text in on flash drive. i want to start everyone working in indesign.

see you tomorrow.

CD Booklet Images

I am doing a booklet for the band Mates of State. Along with the images, I am planning to include patterns/designs in brightly-colored watercolor or colored pencil. I am planning to use a simple sans serif font, maybe arial.

Homework, Notes 11/17/09

hello

for this week you will be making thumbnail sketches that depict as accurately as possible the layout of very single page of your book. think of this as a sort of 'storyboard' plan. it's a straightforward process with the following steps:
  1. work out your physical page size/proportion.
  2. figure out exactly which specific images and text will be included (in this case your song titles & lyrics will make up the majority of your text).
  3. develop a grid (fixed margins, columns, rows, etc.) that will keep your content organized and navigable. remember that you will want to achieve both consistency and variation from page to page.
  4. think about telling a story with your content, about creating drama, rhythm and sense with your sequencing and layouts.
  5. create thumbnails sketches of your entire book. the more accurate you are with the thumbnails (cleaner drawing, more specific image & copy amount representation), the less time you will spend working out the final pages.

i want TWO full sets of thumbnails from everybody. those who are comfortable working in adobe indesign may begin there; we will be going over indesign in class next week. thumbnails may be drawn or printed.

stay tuned for the specific classroom number we'll be meeting at.

Homework, Notes 11/10/09

IMPORTANT: i forgot to mention in class- please read pp.62-79 and pp.112-129 in thinking with type. they are, respectively, the first parts of the TEXT and GRID sections.

also, please post your final symbol items here- both yours and your client's.

so we are starting a new assignment: music album special packaging. this will be our last big assignment. you will be creating EITHER a book or a website.

the first part will involve collecting content. so... choose an album by an artist that you relate to, or think would be an interesting design challenge. then:
  1. collect ALL the song lyrics for this album. they will be the 'body' text of your piece.
  2. collect/create 12 pieces of ORIGINAL artwork. they can be:
  • photos you take
  • illustrations you make
  • photos or illustrations by friends/colleagues who are willing to participate
  • graphics/typographics; in the case of this choice, you must collect 12 examples of found inspiration and an create an original poster that illustrates how you plan to use this found material
you may present the above digitally or printed. also, please bring a sample track via MP3 of your album for us to listen to.

Homework, Notes 11/5/09

hi boys & girls!

your assignment this week is simple.

connect with your designer/client partner and get feedback on your sketches from this past week. revise & repeat as necessary. create a final design.

then, make a 3 page document to present your design to your client and the class. it should consist of the following pages:
  1. a selection of the original symbols, words and type that your client presented to you, arranged nicely on the page
  2. a short paragraph description of the process and reasoning behind your solution
  3. the final design
remember, this is a presentation, so it should look as clean, beautiful and unified as possible.

we are meeting in our regular room on tues.
For some reason the colors are coming out weird, michaels logos are supposed to be red blue and white and my crest is supposed to be black blue and green.

I unfortunately can't make it to class...
Here is my HW though!

For Tues., Nov. 3 we are meeting in room i406 (at 55 w.13th street)

apparently there not quite enough mac stations for everyone to work on in this lab, so those who are most comfortable working on their laptops please bring them in.

see you then.
